Scope note
Any or all of those processes involved in the manufacture of leather or rawhide that follow curing and precede tanning or tawing of skins or hides. The objective is to rid the skins or hides of substances not wanted in the finished leather, and to put them in the proper chemical and physical condition for tanning or tawing.
